Ele traduziu o Novo Testamento, que foi publicado pela primeira vez em 1681.Almeida começou a traduzir o Antigo Testamento, mas morreu sem concluir o trabalho para o qual havia dedicado sua vida.
Seu último trabalho foi Ezequiel 48.21.
Sua obra foi concluída pelo pastor holandês Jacobus op den Akker.A Bíblia completa em Português foi publicada em 1681.
Mais tarde, em 1898, foi revista e uma nova edição foi publicada: "Revista e Corrigida".

O Novo Testamento contém 27 livros (Mateus, Marcos, Lucas, João, Atos, Romanos, Coríntios 1 e 2, Gálatas, Efésios, Filipenses, Colossenses 1 Tessalonicenses, 2 Tessalonicenses, 1 Timóteo, 2 Timóteo, Tito, Philemon, hebraicos, James, 1 Peter, 2 Pedro, 1 João, 2 João, 3 João, Judas, Apocalipse).A tradução João Ferreira é a Versão da Bíblia preferida pelos evangélicos no Brasil.
